ABSTRACT Concrete piers located in steep mountainous regions are highly susceptible to damage from debris flows. Existing studies often oversimplify flows as particle or equivalent fluids, neglecting their multiphase characteristics. In this paper, a three‐dimensional numerical model of flow‐bridge interaction is established based on the coupled CFD‐DEM approach. The Hertz–Mindlin (no‐slip) and Navier–Stokes equations employed describe behavior contacts fluid phase, respectively. An interface program compiled using user‐defined functions (UDFs) facilitates transfer information (drag, buoyancy, viscous forces) between particles. accuracy validated by simulation results single‐particle settlement underwater granular collapse. This study conducts detailed investigation into mechanisms flow—bridge piers, considering cross‐sectional shape solid volume fraction. It has been discovered that bridge significantly influences separation points. A power function effectively describes relationship fraction peak impact force coefficient, C d . Simplifying dry fluids may lead an underestimation pressure.
