Abstract Vertical isolation has gained interest in recent years by incorporating the damping mechanism within height and evading concentration of elements base. However, dividing building into separate systems may be less practical regular buildings. This study used a conventional steel-braced lateral load-resisting system inherently made up two soft stiff portions to compare efficiency technique. Shape memory alloys (SMAs) with flag-shaped hysteresis mechanisms are assigned among subsystems elaborate mechanism. Parametric coding OpenSees investigates large set frames altered stiffness subsystem subjected time histories 40 records 2 10 % probability exceedance. Increasing reduces interstory roof drift more than 30%. SMA employment is shown effective reducing interstory, at soft- subsystem. The maximum reduction happens on 1st floor 32% least 8%. There was mild rise subsystem’s responses, however, this increase neglected as performance level governed response. SMA-equipped frame then further assessed incremental dynamic analysis. Fragility curves damage states delineate promising response from system.
