The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is leading to an increase of the global production plastics since use personal protective equipment (PPEs, i.e. gloves, gowns, masks, packaging items), has become mandatory prevent spread virus. Plastic breaks down into micro/nano particles due physical or chemical biological actions environment. Due small dimensions, ubiquitous and persistent nature, plastic represent a significant threat ecosystems can entry food chains. Among polymers used for PPEs, polystyrene less studied regarding its eco-geno-toxicity. This study aims investigate acute, chronic subchronic effects microplastic beads (PS-MP, size 1.0 μm) on three freshwater species, alga Raphidocelis subcapitata, rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus, crustacean Ceriodaphnia dubia benthic ostracod Heterocypris incongruens. Furthermore, potential genotoxicity ROS PS-MP were also determined in C. dubia. Results revealed that acute occurred at concentrations order dozens mg/L B. calyciflorus hundreds H. Regarding long-term toxicity, increasing with EC50s units (C. dubia), (B. calyciflorus) thousands (R. subcapitata) μg/L observed. Both chronic/sub daphnids more sensitive than ostracods. Moreover, when neonates exposed PS-MP, alterations genetic material as well occurred, starting from μg/L, probably inflammatory responses. At last, risk quotient (RQ) measure posed by PS-MPs environment, was calculated obtaining value 7.2, higher threshold 1.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the accessibility, social gathering, lifestyle, and working environment to be changed reduce infection. Coronavirus spreads between people in several different ways. Small liquid particles (aerosols, respiratory droplets) from an infected person are transmitted through air surfaces that contact with humans. Reducing transmission modified heating, ventilation, conditioning (HVAC) systems building design potential solutions. A comprehensive review of engineering control preventive measures mitigate spread, healthy design, material was carried out. current state-of-the-art presented include ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI), bipolar ionization, vertical gardening, indoor plants. They have improve quality. In addition, this article presents materials (e.g., copper alloys, anti-microbial paintings) smart technologies automation, voice control, artificial intelligence-based facial recognition) infections communicable diseases.

During the first year of COVID-19 pandemic, facemasks became mandatory, with a great preference for disposable ones. However, benefits face masks health safety are counteracted by environmental burden related to their improper disposal. An unprecedented influx entering environment has been reported in last two years along implications natural environments terms biodegradability, released contaminants and ecotoxicological effects. This critical review addresses several aspects current literature regarding (bio)degradation (eco)toxicity contaminants, identifying uncertainties research needs that should be addressed future studies. While it is indisputable mask contamination contributes already alarming plastic pollution, we still far from determining its real contribution issue. The paucity studies on biodegradation ecotoxicity uncontrolled variables involved during experimental procedures, compromising eventual comparison conventional debris. Studies abundance composition mask-released (microplastics/fibres/ chemical compounds) under pre- post-pandemic conditions should, therefore, encouraged, tests considering environmentally relevant settings. To achieve this, methodological strategies developed overcome technical difficulties quantify characterise smallest MPs fibres, adsorbents, leachates increase relevancy conditions.
