Microplastics (MPs) have been confirmed as a hotspot for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in wastewater. However, the impact of MPs on transfer ARGs wastewater treatment remains unclear. This study investigated roles and mechanisms conventional (polystyrene, PS) biodegradable (polylactic acid, PLA) conjugative during ultraviolet disinfection. The results showed that significantly facilitated compared with individual disinfection, PSMPs exhibited higher facilitation than PLAMPs. effects were attributed to light shielding production reactive oxygen species (ROS) nanoplastics from irradiation MPs. protected bacteria inactivation. More importantly, ROS generated irradiated induced intracellular oxidative stress further increased cell membrane permeability intercellular contact, ultimately enhancing ARG exchange. greater fragmentation PLAMPs resulted stronger enhancement. highlights concerns associated treatment, which provides new insights into combined risks environment.
