Bacteria are now generally believed to adopt two main lifestyles: planktonic individuals, or surface-attached biofilms. However, in recent years medical microbiologists started stress that suspended bacterial aggregates a major form of communities chronic infection sites. Despite sharing many similarities with biofilms and thus defined as biofilm-like aggregates, these non-attached clumps cells vivo show much smaller sizes different formation mechanisms. Furthermore, ex clinical isolates were frequently reported be less attached abiotic surfaces when compared standard type strains. While this third lifestyle is starting draw heavy attention studies, it has long history natural environmental sciences. For example, marine gel particles formed by bacteria attachment phytoplankton exopolymers have been well documented oceans; large river lake snows loaded found freshwater systems; multispecies “flocs” used wastewater treatment. This review focuses on variety settings, some technical developments facilitating aggregate research. The aim summarise the characteristics types bridging knowledge gap, provoking new perspectives for researchers from fields, highlighting importance more research input closely relevant our daily life.
