Due to their persistence or continuous discharge, toxic substances are present in the aquatic environment, and can bioaccumulate biomagnify food web, generating a significant ecological risk threat human health. The study assess occurrence tissue (muscle, liver, stomach gills) distribution of 59 anthropogenic contaminants emerging concern (CECs) marine fish from Brazil. A simpler faster analytical methodology based on vortex-assisted matrix solid-phase dispersion (VA-MSPD) liquid chromatography coupled tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was developed validated. Limits quantification ranged 3.31 114 ng g-1 dw with recovery rates between 60 140 % relative standard deviation below 20 %. ultraviolet filters 4-hydroxybenzophenone (4HB) (benzophenone-3 metabolite) benzocaine (Et-PABA), antibacterial salicylic acid were frequently accumulated muscle liver at concentrations 39.5 21.0 ngg-1 dw. determined resulted be lower than tolerable daily intake recommended by European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

Avobenzone (AV) is one of the most widely used UV-A filter compound in sunscreen products despite showing photoinstability under radiation. Although a high number studies have focused on AV different organic solvents, much less data are available its ecotoxicological aspect. Despite determination exact environmental concentration being essential for both risk assessment and realistic experiments, methods aimed at this were found to be controversial or unsuitable. In present study, we first investigated presence tautomeric forms with LC-MS, identified previously undetermined characteristic parent ions, that (environmental) samples summed two forms. Photostability experiments UV-Vis spectrophotometry revealed that, aqueous solutions, mainly photodegradation photoisomerisation occurs neutral pH, while processes similar extent might acidic conditions (pH=3). Temperature (10 vs. 25°C) had no significant effect photostability pH=3, but higher temperature contributed faster decrease pH=7. Freeze-thaw stability water showed an extensive degradation AV. Our findings call attention important methodical parameters considerations (e.g., seasonality, sampling time, sample preparation) contribute more matrices. Future should focus investigating known photoproducts solutions determine processes.

This study aimed to assess the presence of 21 UVFs and metabolites in coastal regions Iberian Peninsula, evaluate their environmental risk, identify possible influential factors affecting measured concentrations. Sampling was carried out spring summer seasonal variations. were detected 43 46 sampling sites. Only 5 found above LOD: BP4, OC, BP3 BP1 BP8. Samples collected Mar Menor had greatest variety compounds per sample highest cumulative The risk characterized using Risk Quotients (RQ). showed a Low 2 sites while for OC RQ indicated Moderate 22 points. variables that contribute most variation are population density, season, whether it an open bay or not, level urbanization. WWTPs lower influence.

Abstract In the last few decades, there has been a growing interest in understanding behavior of personal care products (PCPs) aquatic environment. this regard, aim study is to estimate accumulation and effects four PCPs within clam Ruditapes philippinarum . The selected were triclosan, OTNE, benzophenone-3, octocrylene. A progressive uptake was observed maximum concentrations tissues reached at end exposure phase, up levels 0.68 µg g −1 , 24 0.81 1.52 for BP-3, OC, TCS, respectively. After PCP post-exposure period, removal percentages higher than 65%. estimated logarithm bioconcentration factor ranged from 3.34 2.93, concordance with lipophobicity each substance. No lethal found although significant changes ethoxyresorufin O-demethylase activity, glutathione S-transferase lipid peroxidation, DNA damage.

The fate of selected UV filters (UVFs) was investigated in two soil aquifer treatment (SAT) systems, one supplemented with a reactive barrier containing clay and vegetable compost the other as traditional SAT reference system. We monitored benzophenone-3 (BP-3) its transformation products (TPs), including benzophenone-1 (BP-1), 4,4′-dihydroxybenzophenone (4DHB), 4-hydroxybenzophenone (4HB), 2,2′-dihydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone (DHMB), along benzophenone-4 (BP-4) avobenzone (AVO) all involved compartments (water, sediments, biofilm). barrier, which enhances biochemical activity biofilm development, improved removal detected UVFs water samples. Among UVFs, only 4HB, BP-4, AVO were sediment But overall retained amounts several orders magnitude larger than those dissolved. These quantitatively reproduced specifically developed simple analytical model that consists mobile compartment an immobile compartment. Retention degradation are restricted to compartment, where absorption simulated well-known compound-specific Kow values. fact observations, metabolites but not (mobile) samples, supports validity. results imply accumulation ensures significant biodegradation even if rates very low suggest our experimental findings for TPs can be extended hydrophobic compounds.
