Ketoprofen, a bicyclic non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug commonly used in human and veterinary medicine, has recently been cited as an environmental contaminant that raises concerns for ecological well-being. It poses growing threat due to its racemic mixture, enantiomers, transformation products, which have ecotoxicological effects on various organisms, including invertebrates, vertebrates, plants, microorganisms. Furthermore, ketoprofen is bioaccumulated biomagnified throughout the food chain, threatening ecosystem function. Surprisingly, despite these concerns, not currently considered priority substance. While targeted eco-pharmacovigilance proposed, data pharmaceutical are limited incomplete. This review aims provide comprehensive summary of most recent findings (from 2017 March 2023) regarding global distribution environment, ecotoxicity towards aquatic animals available removal methods. Special emphasis placed understanding how affects microorganisms play pivotal role Earth’s ecosystems. The broadly covers approaches biodegradation, whole-cell fungal bacterial systems well enzyme biocatalysts. Additionally, it explores potential adsorption by algae phytoremediation removing ketoprofen. will be interest wide range readers, ecologists, microbiologists, policymakers, those concerned about pollution.

The Mediterranean region is facing several environmental changes and pollution issues. Teleosts are particularly sensitive to these challenges due their intricate reproductive biology reliance on specific cues for successful reproduction. Wild populations struggle with the triad of climate change, contamination, overfishing, which can deeply affect success population dynamics. In farmed species, abiotic factors affecting reproduction easier control, whereas finding alternatives conventional diets teleosts crucial enhancing broodstock health, success, sustainability aquaculture sector. Addressing involves ongoing research into formulating specialized diets, optimizing feeding strategies, developing alternative sustainable feed ingredients. To achieve a deeper comprehension challenges, studies employing model species have emerged as pivotal tools. These models offer advantages in understanding mechanisms well-defined physiology, genetic tractability, ease manipulation. Yet, while providing invaluable insights, applicability diverse remains constrained by inherent variations across taxa oversimplification complex interactions, thus limiting extrapolation scientific findings. Bridging gaps necessitates multidisciplinary approaches, emphasizing conservation efforts wild tailored nutritional strategies aquaculture, thereby fostering teleost Mediterranean.
