Identifying metabolism and detoxification mechanisms of Hg in biota has important implications for biomonitoring, ecotoxicology, food safety. Compared to marine mammals waterbirds, MeHg fish is understudied. Here, we investigated Atlantic bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus using organ-specific Se speciation data, stable isotope signatures, particle measurements multiple tissues. Our results provide evidence vivo demethylation biomineralization HgSe particles, particularly spleen kidney. We observed a maximum range 1.83‰ δ202Hg between lean muscle, whereas Δ199Hg values were similar across all Mean percent methylmercury ranged from 8% 90% muscle. The particulate masses higher kidney (Hg: 61 59%, Se: 12 6%, respectively) compared muscle 2%, 0.05%). data supports the hypothesis an organ-specific, two-step wild fish, consisting biomineralization, like reported waterbirds. While mass dependent fractionation signatures highly organ specific, independent tissues make them potential candidates source apportionment studies ABFT. In our study focused on MeHg, considered legacy contaminant threatening environmental public health driving consumption advisories worldwide. Research mostly seabirds mammals, not despite their relevance via seafood large biomass, importance mercury cycling health. Knowledge distribution particles implementation monitoring, needed interpretation pursuit risk posed by MeHg.

Micronutrient deficiency or 'hidden hunger' is of growing importance regionally and globally. Marine fish have the potential to mitigate hidden hunger although certain contaminants they often contain may also pose a health risk. Understanding biological environmental drivers behind essential hazardous element concentrations therefore important develop evidence-based advice for adaptive management strategies. We use Bayesian models predict ten two elements in fillets 14 marine species Northeast Atlantic Ocean. Data from 15,709 individuals six lean, five semi-fatty, three fatty were included. Fish length, fat content, ocean basin, sea temperature salinity used as predictor variables. found good model predictability identified some trends driver effects. length was most with negative effect calcium, copper, manganese, arsenic, positive mercury, suggesting that smaller be safer better source elements. Ocean basin an cases. For selenium, zinc, sizes basins increased north south several species. Fat content exhibited small on iron, phosphorus arsenic many Temperature showed zinc concentration species, while varied among without apparent trend. This first multi-species multi-element study investigate at large spatial scale using approach. The robust indicates models' further understand nutrient yield dynamics fisheries, thereby empowering implementation informed strategies against hunger.

Fillets from a total of 1245 Northeast Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus) sampled in different fishing areas the during 2007–2016 were analysed for mercury, cadmium, arsenic and lead using ICPMS. Mercury levels varied <0.01 to 0.36 mg/kg wet weight (ww) with mean 0.046 ww significantly higher Skagerrak than North Sea, Norwegian Sea west Scotland. Cadmium concentrations <0.002 0.16 value 0.015 ww. Only 0.24 % fish exceeded EU's maximum cadmium respectively. Animals form functional units with their microbial communities, termed metaorganisms. Despite extensive research on some model animals, diversity in many species remains unexplored. Here, we describe the taxonomic profile of microbes from outer gut mucus layer Northeast Arctic cod using a shotgun DNA sequencing approach. We focused to determine if its composition differs that fecal microbiota, which could reveal unique interactions and functions. Metagenomes six individuals were analyzed, revealing three different profiles: Type I is dominated numbers by
