Sub-Saharan Africa faces increasing levels of plastic production and importation, unregulated usage, inadequate waste management systems. This region’s harsh conditions often lead to breaking down into microplastics nanoplastics. review explores the abundance micro/nanoplastics across different environmental mediums, such as surface waters, sediments, aquatic organisms, in sub-Saharan African countries. It also highlights knowledge gaps concerning micro/nanoplastics. The effects plastics on food production, water quality, health, environment are discussed. Strategies address challenges pollution proposed. Finally, concludes with future perspectives for addressing ongoing Africa. materials this study were sourced from published articles Scopus, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, additional platforms, including reports various press releases, using keywords waste, micro/nano-plastic, Africa, toxicity, circular economy. Articles initially screened by reviewing abstracts, followed a thorough reading full papers identify relevant studies. Key information was extracted these selected incorporated review.

ABSTRACT The accumulation of copper ions in the environment can devastate ecological systems and threaten health organisms. Consequently, development effective adsorbents to extract Cu 2+ from aqueous solutions is urgently needed. Here, Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework‐8 (ZIF‐8)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanocomposite fibers were synthesized by electrospinning further characterized using X‐ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). ZIF‐8 powders uniformly distributed on surface fibers, amide CONH bonds formed between NH 2 groups CO PAN. ZIF‐8/PAN demonstrated an exceptional adsorption capacity 275.7 mg g −1 at pH = 4.0. process adhered pseudo‐second‐order kinetics Langmuir isotherm model. mechanism, as conformed FTIR photoelectron (XPS) analysis, involves coordination with ion exchange processes Zn for fibers. This study provides a novel approach removal addresses challenge recovering powder materials wastewater treatment.

Marine microplastics are a global environmental issue, and understanding their distributions in estuaries coastal areas is critical prerequisite for the effective sustainable management of microplastic pollution. Owing to lack methods that exist quantifying content, characterizing distribution difficult. The mass concentration an objective indicator reflects distribution. Therefore, formula calculating proposed through parameters number concentration, size, mesh addition proportions particles with different sizes shapes. On basis large amount existing measured data, concentrations calculated. It can be concluded polypropylene (PP; 72%) polyethylene (PE; 67%) most abundant ocean. Additionally, marine more common (102–103 mg/L) than open sea (0–10 mg/L). maximum surface water approximately 8.0 g/L. Moreover, pollution has significantly increased surrounding sewage treatment plants aquaculture farms.

Microplastics (MPs) are being released into the environment in large quantities, especially less developed parts of world. This group pollutants is mostly leached through heavy plastic dumpsites, pharmaceutical and personal care product containers, hospital wastes, package accessories, litter from food packaging. Consequently, these compounds found different compartments ecosystem, such as soils, sediments, biota, and, surprisingly, drinking water. The present study systematically appraised recent studies on MP pollution Asian African environments. It also summarized trends methods for environmental monitoring MPs removal strategies that have been employed. From data gathered, two key instrumentations involved microscopes visualization Fourier transform-infra-red (FT-IR) spectrometer to classify or characterize MPs. Based surveyed works literature, China South Africa relatively more information contamination diverse matrices within their countries.
