Investments in small and medium-sized anaerobic digestion facilities have the potential to boost biogas production Greece other EU countries. This study aimed evaluate economic feasibility of equipped with combined heat power (CHP) units ranging from 50 400 kW, while treating livestock waste. For this purpose, data were gathered various operations (dairy cattle, poultry, swine, dairy sheep goats) regarding their annual production, revenues, electricity fuel usage, waste generation. Waste samples then collected analyzed assess biochemical methane potential. The capital operational costs facilities, calculated using equations developed within “eMT cluster” project. Findings indicate that current feed-in tariffs (FITs) 0.21 € kWh−1 are insufficient incentivize investment capacities below 250 highlighting need for increased FIT rates or expenditure subsidies. Recommendations include shifting towards simplified technology business models reduced farmer involvement, coupled supportive legislative framework long-term price guarantees. These measures expected foster implementation projects animal husbandry sector.

Long-term anaerobic digestion (AD) of food waste often faces challenges, with volatile fatty acid inhibition being a common issue that hinders optimal performance. This research explores the effect biochar supplementation on long-term AD characterized by inhibition. The findings demonstrate adding modest amount (0.055 g/L) effectively enhances under ambient conditions at 29 °C. reduced acids to safe level 1195 mg/L after 36 days, well within generally accepted threshold 1500 mg/L. is supported other studies, which indicate maintaining VFA concentrations below minimizes risk process and ensures stable operation. Additionally, normalized specific biogas yield averaged 1.33 ± 0.45 m3/kg VS, representing 47.4% improvement over control conducted identical conditions. After stabilization, study assessed whether could maintain functionality stability mesophilic (35 °C) without further supplementation, simulating real-world scenario test efficacy in industrial-like postbiochar resulted an additional 31.8% increase average yield, reaching 1.95 0.25 VS. Biochar increased Methanosaeta methanogens 30%, enhancing direct interspecies electron transfer strengthening syntrophic interactions. shift made aceticlastic 9 times more prominent, improving acetate oxidation, overall stability. These highlight biochar's potential enhance decentralized facilities, promote sustainable management, advance bioeconomy providing replicable model for closing loop.
