Abstract The diversity of functional traits macroinvertebrates in freshwater ecosystems is one the current research hotspots field biodiversity. Understanding trait composition and their factors can make study watershed beta river ecological security patterns more effective. Based on two surveys conducted September 2020 July 2021 Qingyijiang (QYJ) River, longest tributary south bank lower Yangtze River China, we explored compositions relationships between water environment using indices, decomposition, R‐mode linked to Q‐mode, fourth‐corner analysis methods. Our results showed that environmental affected distribution traits, degree effect was reflected by correlation abundance species traits. Physical like flow velocity depth were significantly correlated with biological such as body size swimming ability. In counterparts, some nutrient indicators total phosphorus, ammonia nitrogen, chemical oxygen demand, which habits feeding group At same time, also found a high turnover rate communities river, reflecting strong dispersal ability species. This will be an important guide for conservation river. Local governments take measures conducting quarterly monitoring species; restoring riparian vegetation; limiting hardening riverbanks dredging rivers; controlling wastewater discharges from residential areas both sides river; use pesticides agricultural lands, so on. These become key directions diversity.

Abstract Habitat fragmentation is emerging as a leading cause of biodiversity decline in riverine ecosystems. Several natural and human factors contribute to the rivers. River growing problem that widely spread poses significant challenge conservation freshwater biodiversity, but its impact not fully documented acknowledged. Fragmentation impedes movement aquatic organisms alters flow regimes, disrupting habitats trophic supplies for biodiversity. It can also affect adaptive ability environmental changes, change structure function biotic communities. To understand effects on river ecology, it crucial link spatial structural implications. This article examines occurrence frequency ecological community benthic biota. review aims elucidate overall ecology recommends possible measures mitigate impact. Urgent action required establish comprehensive global network free‐flowing systems revive previously exploited rivers different regions enhance protection sustainable utilization
