Water diversion projects effectively mitigate the uneven distribution of water resources but can also influence aquatic biodiversity and ecosystem functions. Despite their importance, impacts such on multi-domain microbial community dynamics underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Utilizing high-throughput sequencing, we investigated bacterial, archaeal, fungal along eastern route South-to-North project during both non-water period (NWDP) (WDP). Our findings revealed competitive exclusion effects among bacterial archaeal communities WDP, characterized by decreased species richness increased biomass, while biomass significantly declined. Distance-decay relationships suggested homogenization WDP. Robustness analyses reduced stability with primarily influencing stability, environmental factors had a greater impact communities. Stochastic processes, homogenizing dispersal drift, intensified for Notably, only functional diversity relative abundance chemoheterotrophic organic compound catabolic bacteria declined photoautotrophic bacteria. PLS-PM indicated that shaped assembly processes guilds, whereas This study enhances our understanding WDP underscores importance assessing direct resulting fluctuations.

Storage reservoirs are crucial components of long-distance water diversion projects, where may lead to changes in microbial diversity and community structure. Seasonal variations also drive alterations communities. However, the way that microbes assemble under combined effects seasonal storage reservoir has not been extensively studied. Jihongtan Reservoir is terminal Yellow River Qingdao Water Diversion Project (YQWD), which had an average annual period exceeding 290 days recent years. In this study, 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing was used investigate dynamics assembly planktonic bacterial communities during Reservoir. The results indicate bacteria were able maintain stable across all four seasons, while structure underwent significant succession. temperature (WT) found be primary driving environmental factor influencing dynamic Co-occurrence network patterns varied different particularly spring winter. displayed most complexity, showcasing highest connectivity greater stability. contrast, winter simpler, exhibiting lower local but higher global analysis neutral model null revealed relative importance deterministic stochastic processes governing varies seasonally. Stochastic (dispersal limitation) more prominent spring, summer, autumn, (heterogeneous selection) play a role This study essential for gaining comprehensive understanding projects offers valuable references assessment other similar projects.

This study presented a comprehensive analysis of the microbial ecology in water diversion rivers (WDRs) source area East Route South-to-North Water Diversion Project (ER-SNWDP) China across various periods. Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Acidobacteriota, and Bacteroidota were identified as dominant phyla river sediment. During wet period, communities exhibited highest richness, biodiversity, most intense antagonistic relationships compared to those dry normal Generally, network predominantly existed symbiotic models characterized by mutual benefit symbiosis throughout all co-occurrence was found be complex, with OTUs showing closest interconnections. The mechanisms governing community diversity, succession, biogeography spatial turnover species stochastic processes. A more pronounced impact processes on assemblages observed during or periods than period. Functional prediction metabolic pathways indicated that main ecological functions encompassed carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid energy etc. could provide essential scientific data for regulation, protection, resources management WDRs.
