Bacterial community is strongly associated with activated sludge performance, but there still remains a knowledge gap regarding the rare bacterial assembly and their influence on system performance in industrial wastewater treatment plants (IWWTPs). Here, we investigated communities 11 full-scale IWWTPs similar process designs, aiming to uncover ecological processes functional traits regulating abundant communities. Our findings indicated that was governed by stochastic processes; thereby, taxa are generally present compartments across different types. On contrary, were primarily driven deterministic (homogeneous selection 61.9%-79.7%), thus they only exited specific The co-occurrence networks analysis showed majority of keystone taxa, contributing more network stability. Furthermore, bacteria rather than oxic compartment contributed degradation xenobiotics compounds, main potential drivers pollutant removal. This study demonstrated irreplaceable roles maintaining IWWTPs, called for environmental engineers microbial ecologists increase attention biosphere.
