Conserving the quality of transferred water ensures success and sustainability interbasin diversion works, which are increasingly crucial for global security. Despite intensive scientific engineering efforts, carbon dynamics in these artificial rivers have been overlooked. The accumulation organic mud some transfer canals, example, Middle Route South-to-North Water Diversion (SNWT) China, poses multifaceted risks, including jeopardized quality, disrupted supply, surging removal expenses. In contrast, natural channels delivery, such as parallel East SNWT, do not experience challenges. Our study reveals that open concrete canal Route, devoid connections to local bodies, compromises hydrological connectivity, contrasting with enhances it. This, turn, undermines microbial stochastic assembly processes, impedes introduction habitat-generalist species, facilitates detrital within ecosystem, presumably due constraints on bacterial community functions. These findings can improve future designs schemes, approaches channel construction, preserving quality.
