Abstract We demonstrate that doping hydroxyapatite (HAp) with Cr 3+ ions induces oxygen vacancies, contributing to paramagnetism. Cathodoluminescence and photoluminescence analyses reveal increased vacancy formation in $${\text{O}}{\text{H}}^{-}$$ OH - $${\text{P}}{\text{O}}_{4}^{3-}$$ PO 4 3 groups rising concentrations, highlighted by stronger cathodoluminescence emissions at 2.57 2.95 eV the emission 3.32 eV. Raman spectroscopy shows new modes 900 970 cm −1 , indicating distortion of v 1 vibrational mode due substitution Ca(II) sites HAp lattice. X-ray photoelectron confirms HAp:Cr. Magnetometry reveals a shift from diamagnetism pure increasing paramagnetism HAp:Cr higher content, achieving 0.0460 emu/g 10 kOe concentrations than 2.9 at.%. This is attributed singly ionized vacancies $$V^{\prime}_{{\text{O}}}$$ V O aligning along an external magnetic field, linked $${\text{PO}}_{4}^{{3}-}$$ replacement $${\text{PO}}_{3}^{{2}-}$$ 2 HAp.
