With the recent review of European Environmental Regulations for Water Quality, which plan to reduce contaminant concentration limits in drinking and surface waters by 2036, an increasing demand wastewater depollution arises. Metastable amorphous nanoprecursors iron oxyhydroxides (IOH) calcium carbonates (CC) interact with various pollutants natural systems via processes such as coprecipitation adsorption. In this research, ferrihydrite (FHY) were testes Cr (VI) retention cover acidic neutral environments basic media, respectively. An original novel approach is proposed investigating uptake capacity mechanisms well minerals transformation presence two biodegradable organic compounds (EDTA - ethylenediaminotetraacetic acid EDDS ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid). Geochemical modelling coprecipitated species was also considered. TCLP (toxicity characteristic leaching procedure) experiments revealed that remains fixed FHY structure under near conditions. One year old ferrite's stability examined showed addition organics slowed into crystalline polymorphs. sequestration ferrites occurred reduced (III) its less toxic specie. Quantitatively, higher amount removed (up 97.65 mg/g) then adsorption (ca. 33.76 mg/g). These findings provide insight influence (bio)availability mobility, affect elemental cycle, including transition across trophic chain at contaminated (i.e., mining sites mine drainage) form naturally.
