Integrating nanomaterials into membranes has revolutionized selective transport processes, offering enhanced properties and functionalities. Mixed-matrix (MMMs) are nanocomposite (NCMs) that incorporate inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) organic polymeric matrices, augmenting mechanical strength, thermal stability, separation performance, antifouling characteristics. Various synthesis methods, like phase inversion, layer-by-layer assembly, electrospinning, surface modification, enable the production of tailored MMMs. A trade-off exists between selectivity flux in pristine polymer or plain ceramic/zeolite membranes. In contrast, MMMs, NPs exert a profound influence on membrane enhancing both permeability simultaneously, besides exhibiting antibacterial efficacy. Membranes reported this work find application diverse notably niche membrane-based applications, by addressing challenges such as fouling degradation, low flux, selectivity, poor rejection properties. This review comprehensively surveys recent advances nanoparticle-integrated across various fields water purification, heavy metal removal, dye gaseous separation, pervaporation (PV), fuel cells (FC), desalination. Efforts have been made to underscore role advancing environmental remediation efforts drinking quality concerns through interesting case studies literature.
