Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) represents an energy-efficient process for the removal of biological nitrogen from ammonium-rich wastewater. However, susceptibility anammox bacteria to coexisting heavy metals considerably restricts their use in engineering practices. Here, we report that acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL), a signaling molecule mediates quorum sensing (QS), significantly enhances rate by 24% under Cu2+ stress. A suite macro-/microanalytical and bioinformatic analyses was exploited unravel underlying mechanisms AHL-induced resistance. Macro-/microanalytical evidence indicated AHL regulations on production, spatial distribution, functional groups extracellular polymeric substances were not significant, ruling out partitioning complexation as principal mechanism. Meanwhile, molecular showed upregulated transcriptional levels resistance genes (sod, kat, cysQ, czcC responsible antioxidation defense, sequestration, transport) appreciable extents, indicating intracellular primary This study yielded mechanistic understanding regulatory roles consortia, providing fundamental basis utilizing QS regulation efficient wastewaters with metal
