ABSTRACT Over the last decade, various studies have focused on functioning of local food policy councils and their key role in institutionalizing participatory governance mechanisms involving stakeholders concerned with promotion sustainable systems. Nevertheless, literature remains scattered, inconclusive, mostly dissociated from development goals (SDGs), which are increasingly used by organizations government agencies alike. Based a systematic analysis 99 academic articles, this realist synthesis sheds light sustainability outcomes success factors system governance. Findings show that systems can play significant achieving sustainability, although coverage SDGs very uneven across objectives considered. The study also shows several collaborative principles—including broad participation, facilitative leadership, consensus‐building—in these Contributions to managerial implications discussed.
