Abstract Increased use and increasing demands pose serious threats to rangelands. In this study, we document a pronounced downward trend in rangeland quality the Alborz Mountains Firozkuh County, Iran using analysis of three machine‐learning models (MLMs). A total 1,147 transects were established evaluate trends from field data collected over 7‐year period. Twelve independent conditional factors analyzed for their relationships range through MLMs—Random Forest (RF), classification regression tree (CART), support vector machine (SVM). Based on assessments trained validated models, RF, with ROC‐AUC = 0.96, was determined be most robust. The results show that about 20% study area is critically degraded condition. Distances roads livestock density are two strongly linked degradation. These results, combination observations, indicate rangelands face major challenges (overgrazing early grazing) require new strategies mitigate prevent damages. This may provide important guidance evaluating conditions other regions world.

Abstract. The 4 per 1000 initiative aims to maintain and increase soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks for fertility, food security, climate change adaptation mitigation. One way enhance SOC is (C) inputs the soil. In this study, we assessed amount of C that are necessary reach a target by ‰ yr−1 on average, 30 years, at 14 long-term agricultural sites in Europe. We used Century model simulate required level additional these sites. Then, analyzed how would under future scenarios temperature increase. A major path helping agriculture achieve the dual challenges of production and environmental preservation, consists transitioning from current, external input-based, conventional farming systems to a biodiversity-based agricultural system that rely more on ecosystem services. One lever this transition diversifying agri-food using practices such as rotation extension, intercropping (IC), multiple cropping or multi-services cover crops (MSCC) implementation. Here, we investigated what extent combination diversification could contribute enhancement sustainability current through an ex ante evaluation. We compared performances five diversified (DIV) arable crop regions France their local less reference (REF) by calculating various criteria implementing multi-criteria decision aid model. 76 assessing three dimensions were calculated (10, 17 49 for economic, social respectively). The EU Mission Board for Soil Health and Food proposed a series of quantitative targets European soils to become healthier. Among them, current soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration losses in croplands (0.5% yr −1 on average at 20 cm depth) should be reversed an increase 0.1–0.4% by 2030. Quantitative are used policy makers incentivize the implementation agricultural practices that SOC stocks. However, there different approaches calculate them. In this paper, we analyzed effect exogenous matter (EOM) inputs evolution stocks, with particular focus new First, illustrated through two case-study experiments set when stock is calculated considering as reference: 1) level onset experiment 2) trend baseline, i.e., control treatment without EOM addition. Then, 11 long-term (LTEs) addition estimate amount (C) input needed reach 0.1 0.4% Food, approaches. We found that, target relative experiment, 2.51 2.61 Mg C ha additional were necessary, respectively. Reaching baseline required 1.38 1.77 input, Depending calculation method used, estimated amounts each significantly from other. Furthermore, quality represented retention rate material (EOM crop residue), had significant variation Our work highlights necessity take into consideration especially decreasing independently baseline.

Abstract Soils store vast amounts of carbon (C) on land, and increasing soil organic ( SOC ) stocks in already managed soils such as croplands may be one way to remove C from the atmosphere, thereby limiting subsequent warming. The main objective this study was estimate amount additional input needed annually increase by 4‰ at 16 long‐term agricultural experiments Europe, including exogenous matter EOM additions. We used an ensemble six models ran them under two configurations: (1) with default parametrization (2) parameters calibrated site‐by‐site fit evolution control treatments (without ). compared model simulations analysed factors generating variability across models. able reproduce stock unfertilised treatments. found that, average, experimental sites 1.5 ± 1.2 Mg ha −1 year per over 30 years, (multi‐model median standard deviation sites). That is, a 119% control. While mean annual temperature, initial had significant effect predicted configuration (i.e., relative mean), only water‐related variables precipitation potential evapotranspiration) explained divergence between when calibrated. Our work highlights challenge agriculture accentuates need increasingly lean multi‐model ensembles predicting trends related processes. To reliability future climate change, we suggest developers better constrain decomposition. Highlights feasibility target studied experiments. An uncertainty predictions.
