A large number of microplastics (MPs) have been found in various stages wastewater treatment plants, which may affect the functional microbial activity activated sludge and lead to unstable pollutant removal performance. In this study, effects different concentrations polylactic acid (PLA MPs) on system performance, nitrification phosphorus (P) activities, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were evaluated. The results showed that under same influent conditions, low (50 particles/(g TS)) PLA MPs had no significant effect effluent quality. average efficiencies chemical oxygen demand, phosphate, ammonia all above 80%, total nitrogen remained 70%. High (200 inhibited activities polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) nitrifying bacteria. specific anaerobic P release rate decreased from 37.7 23.1 mg P/(g VSS·h), aerobic uptake also significantly decreased. oxidation 0.67 0.34 N/(g while change nitrite was not significant. dosing EPS humic content. ABSTRACT Nanoplastics, commonly used in cosmetics, enter wastewater systems and interact with activated sludge, yet their effects on microorganisms, essential for treatment, remain poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the polyacrylic acid-based nanoplastics (PANPs) microorganisms sludge. PANPs were characterized terms material composition, size, zeta potential, additive content. Acute (30 min) prolonged (up 6 h) toxicity tests performed evaluate negative heterotrophic nitrifying In addition, ready inherent biodegradability assess degradation environment within treatment plants, respectively. results showed a significant acute inhibition activity 55 72%, respectively) at highest concentration tested (100 mg/L, 30 min), primarily attributed presence 1-dodecanol detected PANPs. This effect decreased exposure, likely due volatilization 1-dodecanol. Nevertheless, found be non-biodegradable both tests. Although do not appear pose long-term threat persistence raises concerns about possible accumulation.
