Transilience, the perceived capacity to persist, adapt flexibly, and positively transform in face of an adversity, is a promising construct for understanding human adaptation climate change risks. However, question remains whether transilience also relevant other adversities. In this paper, we investigate role context COVID-19 pandemic, which posed more urgent acute threat individuals compared change. We conducted two studies Italy Netherlands examine people perceive across different time points countries, severity pandemic government measures varied. Furthermore, studied relationship between adaptive responses, including individual collective behaviors, cognitive coping, well-being, positive personal The results suggest that COVID-19, higher promotes responses mental health Netherlands, but not Italy. Moreover, longitudinal analyses indicate may be causally related future behaviors well-being. These findings robust predictor well-being adversities, although depend on specific context. Future research directions theoretical implications are discussed.

New disease challenges, societal demands and better or novel types of data, drive innovations in the structure, formulation analysis epidemic models. Innovations modelling can lead to new insights into processes use available yielding improved control stimulating collection data types. Here we identify key challenges for formulation, mathematical models pathogen transmission relevant current future pandemics.

Abstract A comprehensive view of disease epidemics demands a deep understanding the complex interplay between human behaviour and infectious diseases. Here, we propose flexible modelling framework that brings conclusions about influence mobility transmission on early epidemic growth, with applicability in outbreak preparedness. We use random matrix theory to compute an threshold, equivalent basic reproduction number $$R_{0}$$ R 0 , for SIR metapopulation model. The model includes both systematic features mobility. Variations rates, modes (i.e. commuting migration), connectivity strengths determine threshold value whether or not may potentially establish population, as well local incidence distribution.
