Science, technology and innovation (STI) policy is shaped by persistent framings that arise from historical context. A series of weaknesses in creativity, research design, and quality writing continue to handicap energy social science. Many studies ask uninteresting questions, make only marginal contributions, lack innovative methods or application theory. also have no explicit rigor, suffer from mangled structure poor writing. To help remedy these shortcomings, this Review offers suggestions for how construct questions; thoughtfully engage with concepts; state objectives; appropriately select methods. Then, the enhancing theoretical, methodological, empirical novelty. We recommend that researchers beware hierarchies evidence utilized some disciplines, place more emphasis on balance appropriateness design. style, we offer tips regarding macro microstructure as well coherent Our hope is will inspire interesting, robust, multi-method, comparative, interdisciplinary impactful accelerate contribution science can both theory practice.

Understanding how policymaking processes can influence the rate and direction of socio-technical change towards sustainability is an important, yet underexplored research agenda in field transitions. Improvements in energy efficiency and reductions demand are expected to contribute more than half of the reduction global carbon emissions over next few decades. These unprecedented require transformations systems that provide services. However, dominant analytical perspectives, grounded neoclassical economics social psychology, focus upon marginal changes only limited guidance on how such may occur they can be shaped. We argue a socio-technical transitions perspective is suited address complexity challenges involved. This understands services as being provided through large-scale, capital intensive long-lived infrastructures co-evolve with technologies, institutions, skills, knowledge behaviours create broader 'sociotechnical systems'. Complex societal or environmental problems require fast and substantial socio-technical transitions. For instance, in the case of climate change, these transitions need to take place energy, transport several industry sectors. To induce accelerate such transitions, numerous policy interventions are required, which interact with each other mixes.
