The maritime shipping industry accounts for 3 % of global greenhouse gas emissions and delivers 90 globally traded goods. Maritime is heavily reliant on fossil fuels. There increasing policy pressure to cut achieve the Paris Agreement meet decarbonization targets. This paper aims analyze sector coupling sustainable energy transitions in shipping, exploring interlinkages between transport, energy, industry, agriculture forestry sectors. First, this analyses opportunities barriers other industries. Second, adds new knowledge wider implications sector, role various stakeholders supporting or impeding transitions, issues at international, regional national level links coupling. research uses a mixed methods approach, applying both qualitative including interviews quantitative modeling. thereby theories from sustainability with techno-economic modeling approaches. Our finds that couplings sectors are growing importance as transitioning towards decarbonized renewable marine At same time there competition scarce natural resources sectors, aviation road transport. Socio-technical aspects, particularly financial political nature, key factors determine speed direction transition, yet they remain under-explored.
