Pump as turbine (PAT) is an efficient, simple, and cost-effective equipment combining pump one of the excellent energy recovery devices. It helpful to master flow characteristics key component impeller for further optimization design PAT. To analyze unsteady features in a double-suction operating turbine, numerical simulations were conducted using shear stress transport (SST) k-ω turbulence model at designed conditions. By utilizing proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) dynamic mode (DMD) methods on velocity field single cycle, dominant modes up fourth order, along with their respective space–time information, can be extracted. The vorticity analysis performed first four extracted two different methods. Additionally, vortex structures Ω method. demonstrates that POD DMD effectively decompose intricate within into dynamic–static interference modes, fundamental dissipative modes. dominant, reflecting influenced by stationary components impeller. structure mainly small tubular point vortex. captures steady caused blade channel geometry. continuous diameter becomes larger. reflects separation generated blades disturbances from components. dominated discontinuous Comparing outcomes modal shows method has distinct advantage showcasing changing nodes.
