Heteroatom-doped porous carbon has become a key material in the field of supercapacitors (SCs) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Here, eucalyptus pulping red liquor was used as starting for straightforward one-step NH4Cl-assisted carbonization technique that produced nitrogen sulfur codoped bifunctional material. The sodium lignosulfonate S atom dopant. NH4Cl added to can not only produce NaCl template but also source. resulting carbons possess rich hierarchical structures high specific surface area (1092 m2 g–1) ID/IG ratio (1.04), leading remarkable electrocatalytic activity with capacitance 326 F g–1 at 0.5 A an identical onset half-wave potentials 0.988 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) 0.847 RHE ORR, compared benchmark Pt/C catalyst. Furthermore, when BLC-N/S-1000 electrocatalyst air zinc–air battery, it showed superior long-term stability 356 h 5 mA cm–2 20 min/cycle. Results present work pave new green method convert abundant low-cost biomass into high-end heteroatom-doped electrochemical energy devices.
