Enerji, modern yaşamın temel itici güçlerinden biridir ve insan hayatında hayati bir öneme sahiptir. Gelişmiş toplumlarda, enerjinin etkin verimli kullanımı bireylerin konforunu artırırken, özellikle fosil yakıtlara dayalı enerji üretiminin çevresel etkilerini azaltmaktadır. Bu bağlamda, binalarda tasarrufu büyük önem taşımaktadır; çünkü yapıların tüketimi toplam kullanımının önemli kısmını oluşturmaktadır. Yapı malzemelerinde faz değiştiren malzeme (PCM) kullanımı, binaların termal performansını artırmak için etkili yol olarak öne çıkmaktadır. PCM'ler, değişimi sırasında ısıyı emer ve/veya salarlar, böylece iç mekân sıcaklığını dengeleyerek klima gibi iklimlendirme sistemlerinin tüketimini azaltmaktadır bina içinde daha istikrarlı ısıl ortam sağlamaktadır. da hem maliyetlerinde tasarruf sağlamakta de etkileri azaltmaktadır, sürdürülebilir yaşam alanı makalede PCM konusunda çalışılarak son 5 yılda gerçekleştirilen katkılanmış duvar harç malzemelerinin özelliklerine etkisi araştırılmıştır. Sonuçlar umut verici çıktılar oluşturduğunu yansıtmakta özelliklerini iyileştirdiğini göstermektedir.
