Metal–organic framework (MOF)-templated materials, such as MOF-derived carbons (MOFdCs), are attractive materials for applications electrocatalysis and energy storage. Unfortunately, the black-box nature of their synthesis remains a barrier to implementation, it is difficult target specific structural features or properties in final material. In this work, we use well-established decomposition mechanism iron-MOF PCN-250 design two-step MOF calcination procedure that selectively generates two cannot be simultaneously obtained single-step calcination, namely, high porosity single iron(II,II) oxide phase. The resulting MOFdC exhibits highest reported PCN-250-derived carbon date (>300 m2/g), iron(II,III) only metal phase present. We further apply bimetallic form mixed-metal oxides with an oxide-type structure highly porous matrix. Calcination cobalt- manganese-doped using successfully produced containing phase; however, nickel-doped mixture species matrix low due increased resistance iron–nickel alloy intermediate oxidation.
