Benchmarking heuristic algorithms is vital to understand under which conditions and on what kind of problems certain perform well. In most current research into optimization algorithms, only a very limited number scenarios, algorithm configurations hyper-parameter settings are explored, leading incomplete often biased insights results. This paper presents novel approach that we call explainable benchmarking. We introduce the IOHxplainer software library, for systematic analysing performance various impact their different components hyperparameters. showcase methodology in context two modular implementations. Through this examine algorithmic configurations, offering across diverse scenarios. provide method evaluating interpreting behaviour efficiency iterative heuristics more transparent comprehensible manner, aiming improve future benchmarking design practices.
