This study reports the performance of a new combined flowform cascade (FC) and constructed wetland (CW) system to enhance nitrogen removal biological degradation urban wastewater. A series 8 FC units at flow rate 200 L/h could markedly increase dissolved oxygen level in wastewater from initial value 0.2 mg/L 5.6 mg/L, thus providing suitable aerobic condition front zone CW for nitrification biodegradation organic contaminants. The results demonstrate that FC/CW achieve sequence anoxic conditions denitrification, respectively. By using aeration, total 49.4% 71.2% biochemical demand 80.9% 86.1% when hydraulic loading was 31.25 m3/m2⋅day. On other hand, exerted negligible effects on phosphate suspended solid removals system. Thus, process exhibited comparable those alone.

Global water supplies are threatened by climate changes and the expansion of urban areas, which have led to an increasing interest in nature-based solutions for reuse reclamation. Reclaimed is a possible resource recharging aquifers, addition organic reactive barrier has been proposed improve removal pollutants. There large focus on pollutants, but less known about multifunctional barriers, that is, how barriers also remove nutrients threaten groundwater ecosystems. Herein, we investigated compost- woodchip-based affect nitrogen (N) pilot soil aquifer treatment facility designed removing recalcitrant compounds investigating composition microbial communities their capacity N transformations. Secondary-treated, ammonium-rich wastewater was infiltrated through concentration ammonium, nitrate, dissolved carbon (DOC) were measured after passage during 1 year operation. The development community examined, potential N-transforming processes quantified determining abundance key functional genes using quantitative PCR. Only one barrier, based compost, significantly decreased ammonium water. However, reduction moderate (between 21 37%), there no differences between types. All dominated members Alphaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Actinobacteria, although differed barriers. Bacterial classes belonging phylum Chloroflexi showed increased relative compost-based In contrast genetic nitrification demonstrated higher potentials denitrification, nitrous oxide reduction, dissimilatory nitrate ammonium. previously shown display high degrade this study, show most performed poorly terms those compost leaked DOC, highlighting difficulties designing satisfactorily meet several purposes.
