Abstract Biomass is the most versatile feedstock for renewable energy and chemical production. Biochemical techniques such as fermentation biomethanation have been developed extensively converting biomass into bioethanol, biogas, high‐value platform chemicals. However, techno‐economic feasibility of various biochemical production a range biofuels chemicals has not fully consolidated in review. This paper reviews studies conversion comparative fashion between feedstocks, treatment methods, product types. The review starts with an overview approaches need pre‐treatment processing second‐generation feedstocks. followed by main processes, offering insights process stages, yields quality, well commercialization prospects challenges. aspects via techniques, efficiency, capacity, minimum selling price, capital cost, unit profitability metrics, are critically reviewed. It was found that bioethanol biogas commercially viable products from biomass. other biobutanol, biohydrogen, furfural, volatile fatty acids, succinate, levulinic acid, sugar alcohols still largely limited low conversion, frail microbial strains, cost enzymes, separation, refining Overcoming these technical bottlenecks, addressing issues price supply security, crucial enhancing overall attractiveness processes fuels resources. © 2023 Society Industrial Chemistry John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
