Abstract Biosurfactants have been profiled as a sustainable replacement for chemical-based surfactants since these bio-based molecules higher biodegradability. Few research papers focused on assessing biosurfactant production to elucidate potential bottlenecks. This aims assess the techno-economic and environmental performance of surfactin in scale 65m 3 , considering different product yields involving European energy crisis 2021–2022. The conceptual design, simulation, techno-economic, assessments were done by applying process engineering concepts software tools such Aspen Plus v.9.0 SimaPro v.8.3.3. results demonstrated high economic values market offset low fermentation yields, recovery efficiency, capital investment. sensitivity analysis assessment elucidated minimum selling price between 29 31 USD/kg surfactin, while processing feasibility 4 5 kg/h is needed reach an equilibrium point. must be improved carbon footprint was 43 kg CO 2 eq/kg surfactin. downstream demand are main bottlenecks aspects contribute 63 25% total emissions. key factors future optimization research.
