Bioplastics possess the potential to foster a sustainable circular plastic economy, but their end-of-life is still challenging. To sustainably overcome this problem, work proposes hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of residual bioplastics as an alternative green path. The focus on cellulose acetate - bioplastic used for eyewear, cigarette filters and other applications showing proof concept chemistry behind conversion, including reaction kinetics model. HTC pure commercial acetates was assessed under various operating conditions (180-250 °C 0-6 h), with analyses solid liquid products. Results show peculiar behavior these substrates HTC. At 190-210 °C, materials almost completely dissolve into phase, forming 5-hydroxymethylfurfural organic acids. Above 220 intermediates repolymerize carbon-rich microspheres (secondary char), achieving yields up 23 %, while itaconic citric acid form. A comparison additives demonstrates that amounts acetyl groups derivatives plasticizers are crucial in catalyzing reactions, creating unique environment capable leading total rearrangement acetates. can thus represent cornerstone establishing biorefinery acetate.

Laser-assisted automated tape placement systems are currently the state of art regarding thermoplastic placement. Eco-friendly blends of polylactic acid (PLA)/polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) have been developed with the use a sustainable plasticizer, namely epoxidized soybean oil methyl ester (ESOME). While PLA, PHB, and their are highly valued for bio-origin compostability at end lifecycle, enhancing flexibility improved processability broadening range applications is an ongoing challenge. For this reason, we present formulation PLA/PHB varying ESOME concentrations, processed by extrusion compression molding. The structural, chemical, rheological, morphological thermal properties without thoroughly investigated through complementary techniques. addition causes remarkable increase in overall mechanical performance blends, as well significant enhancement oxygen barrier properties. Migration analysis to dry food simulant reveals that it below acceptable limit, up 7.5% wt % ESOME.
