ABSTRACT
Evolutionary
explanations
of
mental
disorders
are
a
longstanding
aim
evolutionary
psychiatry,
but
have
suffered
from
complexities
including
within‐disorder
heterogeneity
and
environmental
effects
contemporary
societies
obscuring
possible
ancestral
functions.
Studying
the
relevant
processes
human
evolution
directly
is
not
possible,
so
hypotheses
remained
speculative,
exaggerating
“just‐so
storytelling”
critiques.

genetics,
neuroscience
epidemiology,

effects
of
natural
selection
on
personality
traits
are
still
understudied,
which
is
in
contrast
with
their
importance
for
analyzing
the
evolution

Five
by
estimating
relations
between
characteristics
and
evolutionary
fitness
(reproductive
success:
i.e.,

children)
using
World
Values
Survey
wave
6
data
(
N
=
22,636;
17
countries).
Using
multilevel
Poisson
regression
models
random
slopes,
obtained
a
positive
linear
association
conscientiousness
reproductive
success.
We
also
detected
nonlinear
openness
criterion
measure:

graphical
ANOVA
analyses
showed
that
nonlinearity
emerged
from
fact
only
individuals
above
average
had
lower
effect
sizes
associations
success

low.

gradients

interaction

mammalian

interest
to

biologists
