Results of wheelchair skills training among the disabled persons with lower limb loss of vascular origin

BACKGROUND: Wheelchair skills training is an essential part of rehabilitation the disabled persons with lower limb amputation (LLA) due to peripheral artery disease (PAD). However, nowadays this issue poorly addressed in our country, there are no standardized technologies. AIM: Investigation dynamics extent wheelchair usage among LLA PAD during adjustment using Skills Program (WSP, Canada). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Altogether, 350 patients stump [unilateral tibial ― 116 (33.1%), hip 223 (63.7%), bilateral stumps 6 (1.7%), 5 (1.4%)] were examined clinical settings at Federal State Budgetary Institution Novokuznetsk Scientific and Practical Centre for Medical Social Expertise Rehabilitation Disabled Persons Ministry Labour Protection Russian Federation. Male 268 (76.6%), female 82 (23.4%). Mean age 63.10.52 years. Cause LLA: obliterative (lower atherosclerotic arterial disease) 226 (64.6%), type 2 diabetes mellitus 124 (35.4%). WSP effectiveness was assessed 227 persons. retention 1.1 (0.591.87) years 48 persons, 25 have undergone second time. RESULTS: It found that 86% needed training. Upon completion course level individual increased all participants. This contributed increase their activities participation, which indirectly evidenced by 1.8 fold proportion those outdoors time hospitalization. CONCLUSION: The program provides approach training, based on results a study initial proficiency skills, wishes user himself, his physical, somatic psychological condition. Thanks this, novice users able master basic relatively experienced ones more complex, thereby safe use wheelchair, as well degree independence everyday activity, can be significant share outside house.
