ABSTRACT Litter decomposition is essential in linking aboveground and belowground carbon, nutrient cycles, energy flows within ecosystems. This process has been profoundly impacted by global change, particularly drylands, which are highly susceptible to both anthropogenic natural disturbances. However, a significant knowledge gap remains concerning the extent drivers of litter across different dryland ecosystems, limiting our understanding its role ecosystem metabolism. Using ARIDEC data collection published literature, database on corresponding environmental conditions drylands was developed, comprising 2204 observations from 158 sites. Decomposition rates varied four subregions, with highest dry‐subhumid region (3.24% month −1 ), followed semi‐arid (3.15% arid (2.62% hyper‐arid (2.35% ) regions. Notably, exhibited greatest variability. Anthropogenic systems, such as cropland (5.52% urban ecosystems (7.88% demonstrated higher than systems (averaging 3.07% ). Across rate an exponential function duration (), influenced quality, climate, soil properties. Beyond duration, three boosted regression tree models were developed identify primary factors influencing early ( R 2 = 0.92), mid 0.71), late 0.80) stages. In early‐ mid‐stages, precipitation, atmospheric temperature, moisture critical factors, while UV index initial nitrogen content played roles mid‐phases, respectively. phase, total nitrogen, organic C/N ratio factors. Our findings reveal consistent temporal patterns mechanisms underlying them These insights can enhance accuracy biogeochemical improve predictions their feedback climate system.
