Marine phytoplankton is an emerging source of immunomodulatory bioactive lipids (BLs). Under physiological growth conditions and upon stress challenges, several eukaryotic microalgal species accumulate lipid metabolites that resemble the precursors animal mediators inflammation: eicosanoids prostaglandins. Therefore, marine could serve as a biotechnological platform to produce functional BLs with therapeutic applications in management chronic inflammatory diseases other clinical conditions. However, be commercially competitive, lipidic precursor yields should enhanced. Beside tailoring cultivation native producers, genetic engineering feasible strategy accrue production introduce heterologous biosynthetic pathways hosts. Here, we present state-of-the-art research on from discuss synthetic biology approaches boost their light-driven biosynthesis.

With the growing interest in microalgae as a sustainable food source, concerns about potential chemical contaminants these products have emerged. In this study, sensitive and reliable LC-MS/MS method was developed for simultaneous detection of thiocyanate, perchlorate, chlorate edible samples. The validated with excellent linearity (R2 > 0.998), low limits (LOD: 1–8 μg/kg), quantification (LOQ: 4–26 high recovery rates (75–101.9%) across different sample types. We collected total 77 based on available varieties market, including 43 Spirulina powder samples, 10 Chlorella 24 microalgae-based products, sourced from key production regions China. contamination levels thiocyanate (median: 1843.06–2645.72 μg/kg) perchlorate 23.29–31.4 were consistently quantitated all while concentrations showed greater variability 18.94–160.21 μg/kg). Risk assessment revealed significant dietary exposure risk to estimated daily intake (EDI) values exceeding EPA's subchronic reference dose, whereas no identified or chlorate. Monte Carlo simulations further supported conclusion that posed minimal risks, warrants concern. This study not only provides foundational monitoring but also contributes critical data future safety standards regulatory practices regarding products.
