Abstract Accurate and spatially explicit predictions of tree mortality are critical for understanding forest dynamics guiding management practices. Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) can cover large spatial areas, allowing the estimation attributes characterization canopy vertical structure gaps over various environments. This study integrated field measurements from permanent growth yield plots with ALS-derived to develop zero-inflated beta regression models estimating basal area rates. Specifically, we combined a set related complexity derived ALS data predict map (20 m pixel resolution) rates boreal mixedwood in northern Ontario, Canada. We evaluated how vary depending on stand-level factors, such as stand age type defined by species composition proportions. Our findings demonstrate that structural significantly In particular, found higher associated more complex structures larger gaps. However, magnitude varied composition. The resulting probability rate maps showed highly variable across types attributes, offering possibility analyzing correlation occurrence other variables like soil climate attributes. results support using Enhanced Forest Inventory systems precise timely interventions operational silvicultural planning.

Abstract Excessive tree mortality is a global concern and remains poorly understood as it complex phenomenon. We lack temporally continuous coverage on data. Ground-based observations mortality, e.g ., derived from national inventories, are very sparse, not standardized spatially explicit. Earth observation data, combined with supervised machine learning, offer promising approach to map over time. However, global-scale learning requires broad training data covering wide range of environmental settings forest types. Drones provide cost-effective source by capturing high-resolution orthophotos events at sub-centimeter resolution. Here, we introduce deadtrees.earth, an open-access platform hosting more than thousand centimeter-resolution orthophotos, already 300,000 ha, which 58,000 ha fully annotated. This community-sourced rigorously curated dataset shall serve foundation for initiative gather comprehensive reference In concert will uncover patterns local scales. the attribute changes or project dynamics future. This study explores factors impacting the effectiveness of forest protection policies in Indonesia, focusing on legal regulatory norms. Field findings reveal that community members continue cutting down trees due to economic need and limited awareness policies, contributing significantly degradation. To examine these factors, data were gathered through purposive sampling, targeting respondents— primarily farmers cultivators—engaged wood harvesting. Questionnaire results highlight motives lack policy knowledge as main drivers logging, with many respondents indicating familiarity specifics regarding conservation. The also reviews enforcement existing sanctions, such administrative penalties, fines, imprisonment, their effect within societal The suggest current sanctions have yet effectively curb violations. Based observations a review, this proposes incorporating local wisdom into strategies introducing more impactful social strengthen effectiveness. research contributes understanding challenges conservation suggests pathways enhance culturally sensitive approaches tailored sanctions.
