Abstract This paper deals with a quantitative assessment of the production efficiency forestry sector in EU countries, which is largely neglected literature. Only few studies have been conducted so far, processing data mainly first half last decade. In contrast to these studies, this article we focus on period between 2016 and 2020. Therefore, main objective compare forest fill gap. The empirical results study show that leaders are Germany, Finland, Czech Republic. These countries fully efficient throughout under review. contrast, Bulgaria lags far behind, an score typically around 35%. cluster analysis although similar characteristics, their scores not necessarily at same level.

Abstract Key message A validation convention can be established for forest management optimization models. It consists of (1) the delivery face validation, (2) performing at least one other technique, and (3) an explicit discussion how model fulfills stated purpose. Validation by potential users or external experts is high importance. Context Optimization modeling has long assisted ecosystems, but credibility these models always been debated with criticisms concerning data quality, failures to include relevant processes in scope models, inclusion unrealistic assumptions. widely considered crucial establishing general, validate particular represents a permanent question generally operations research. Aims We aim synthesize practical recommendations development frameworks management. Methods selected sample 46 studies devoted applied practice, analysed contents respect provided critical review. Results clarified meaning usage different validation-related terms that are commonly encountered literature, identified categorised various methods used demonstrate credibility, derived organizing principles helped suggest improvements frameworks. Conclusions we consist three stages. By providing structured consistent information about processes, researchers better their work readers users.

In Lithuania, as in other analyzed countries, greatest attention is concentrated on the protection and monitoring of state forests, while situation private forest sector quite unclear uncertain. most European well there are a lack socio-economic data, no planned methods permanent programs. We claim that problem achieving sustainability sector, case estates owners, could be partially solved by implementing social economic indicators. This study proposes need for establishment database owners Lithuania. this article, we have carried out detailed analysis scientific sources selected indicators to help adoption optimal management solutions sector. To explore establish conducted an empirical applying method semi-structured interview group experts/specialists forestry field. Summarizing results research, it can concluded information about forests Lithuania obvious, would clarify pressing problems face when farming their estates. also allow improvement policy formulation implementation, legal regulations, organization necessary changes forestry. Therefore, criteria ensure more sustainable management.

Abstract Intensive ungulate browsing significantly impacts forests worldwide. However, it is usually not single events that lead to sapling mortality, but the little-researched interactions of browsed saplings with their biotic and abiotic environment. (I) Our objective was assess impact on growth young relative other environmental factors by utilizing height increment as a sensitive measure vitality indicate status. (II) Furthermore, we aimed identify affecting at our study sites, assessed probabilities, effective mitigation measures for impact. We analyzed an extensive dataset 248 wildlife exclosures, which were erected in 2016 beech dominated across Germany annually until 2020. Browsing probability light availability most influential parameters selectively browsed, admixed tree species (e.g., sycamore maple). Height showed abrupt setbacks, caused permanent collapse when exceeded certain level. enhanced increment.
