Introduction As digital village construction advances, technologies are gradually permeating various aspects of rural life, providing a new avenue for improving human settlement environment (RHSE). Methods We matched the 2020 and 2021 data from China Land Economic Survey (CLES) with County Digital Rural Index (CDRI), exploring how development (DVD) influences farmers’ improvement behaviors (HSEIBs). Results discussion Research findings indicate that DVD has significantly increased probability disposing domestic wastewater scientifically adopting sanitation toilets, robustness checks conducted. Further analysis reveals this positive impact is primarily realized through effects enriching villages, villagers social interaction. The heterogeneity in households higher proportion seniors, raises usage toilets but does not promote scientific treatment wastewater. Additionally, when we subdivide into different dimensions, find digitalization infrastructure, economy, life governance can effectively facilitate HSEIBs, least impact.
