This study enhances the understanding of equity crowdfunding as an open innovation tool that allows firms to embrace corporate sustainability. Building on grounded theory, we investigate how campaigns facilitate stakeholder engagement and trigger sustainability-oriented innovation. In form abductive study, our qualitative inquiry adopts interpretive stance collect analyse data from 17 Italian start-ups SMEs successfully completed campaign. We relied semi-structured interviews administered managers investors, in addition secondary sources information. As a result, identify key mechanisms by which enables companies valuable feedback, resources, market insights. According relational view engagement, two-way communication knowledge creation learning, leads development innovations. A conceptual framework is provided showcase activity, aim, impact engagement. Thus, findings highlight dual role investors financial supporters strategic partners driving Borrowing theory's dogmas, contribute literature clarifying function triggering while pursuing value co-creation. From practical standpoint, advise companies, intermediaries, policymakers through crowdfunding's non-financial benefits exploitation achieve sustainability..
