Abstract Urbanization is one of the main drivers biotic homogenization in bird communities worldwide. Yet, only a few studies have addressed its functional consequences on top-down control birds exert insect herbivores. We hypothesized that their inconsistent results reflect overlooked heterogeneity urban habitat for birds, and particular distribution diversity trees. monitored tree diversity, avian predation attempts artificial prey, effect exclusion herbivory 97 trees distributed among 24 experimental plots city Montreal, Canada. characterized urbanization levels through combination variables related to density, impervious surfaces, anthropic noise, human population density. Bird decreased with increasing urbanization, whereas frequency generalist synurbic species increased. found no significant relationship between or diversity. However, was positively correlated irrespective revealed mismatch effects regulation service unraveled importance shaping function ecosystems. Our study advocates consideration intra-urban investigation trophic cascades within cities.
