Abstract Forest soils are important components of forest ecosystems, and soil quality assessment as a decision-making tool to understand maintain productivity is essential. Various methods have been developed, which occasionally generated inconsistent results between types. We assessed the five communities (herb, shrub, Quercus acutissima , Pinus thunbergii Q. – P. mixed plantation) using two common dry barren mountains in Yimeng Mountain area, China. Sixteen physical, chemical biological properties were analysed. The index was determined established minimum data set based on selection principal component analysis Pearson analysis. Silt, total phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), L-leucine aminopeptidase, acid phosphatase vector length identified most representative indicators for set. Linear regression showed that can adequately represent quantify impact different ( P < 0.001). linear non-linear higher (0.59 0.54), plantation (0.41 0.45) lower, similar herb community (0.37 0.44). Soil mostly affected by extracellular enzyme activities communities, reasons low plantations organic carbon (C) C. Overall, we demonstrate method could be useful indicate systems. Mixed improve increasing C, crucial ecosystem balance.

The key role of soil quality improvement in achieving sustainable agricultural development based on highly intensive use farmland is increasingly being recognized, as the ponderance suitable evaluation quality. overarching goal this study was to determine an accurate assessment framework by comparison scoring function (linear and non-linear) integration method (area weighted additive), which integrally evaluates eleven-year field fertilization experiment (including CK, no fertilizer; CF, conventional fertilization; SF, formulated SFO, SF with organic fertilizer). Thirty-three properties, including eighteen physiochemical-related fifteen biological-related associated functions were measured potential indicators, multifunctionality (SMF) applied validate indices (SQIs). Principal component analysis relationship used indicators sensitive management a minimum data set (MDS). results showed that electrical conductivity, large macroaggregate-associated total nitrogen, small carbon, carbon fixation, enzyme activities phenol oxidase cellulase chosen MDS. All SQIs significantly correlated SMF (p < 0.05). strategies affected most different ways, index developed using non-linear additive (SQI-NL) had best sensibility discriminability. SQI value SQI-NL-MDS higher following treatments than fertilizer 0.05), treatment highest (0.66). Soil long-term fertilized suggested constraints between synthetic are related nutrient cycling sustain biological activity due their contribution rates treatment, provides insights into ways reduce gap can provide quantitative tool for from target bridging objectives field-level actions.

In coastal saline–alkali regions, the intrusion of saline water exacerbates nutrient depletion in plow layer, posing a significant challenge to agricultural productivity. Given limited understanding soil fertility these areas and inconsistent results among different assessment methods, this study aims develop more accurate reliable evaluation system. To achieve objective, 108 topsoil samples were systematically collected from lands Jiangsu Province. Several key indicators, including pH, total salinity (TS), organic matter (SOM), nitrogen (TN), phosphorus (TP), potassium (TK), alkaline-hydrolyzable (AN), available (AP), (AK), comprehensively evaluated. Four advanced namely principal component analysis indexing–linear scoring (SQIPCAL), indexing–nonlinear (SQIPCANL), modified Nemerow–linear (SQINemeroL), Nemerow (SQINemeroNL), employed conduct multi-dimensional examination fertility. Additionally, (PCA) was utilized establish minimum data set (MDS), which then compared with (TDS) for precise Linear methods (SQIPCAL SQINemeroL) had higher semi-variogram R2 values nonlinear methods. Moreover, under SQIPCAL SQINemeroL strong correlation observed between TDS MDS, reaching 0.63 0.65, respectively. Based on findings, method, integrated is recommended as an effective approach assessments regions This research not only enriches theoretical such but also provides practical insights sustainable management.
