Abstract Forest soils are important components of forest ecosystems, and soil quality assessment as a decision-making tool to understand maintain productivity is essential. Various methods have been developed, which occasionally generated inconsistent results between types. We assessed the five communities (herb, shrub, Quercus acutissima , Pinus thunbergii Q. – P. mixed plantation) using two common dry barren mountains in Yimeng Mountain area, China. Sixteen physical, chemical biological properties were analysed. The index was determined established minimum data set based on selection principal component analysis Pearson analysis. Silt, total phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), L-leucine aminopeptidase, acid phosphatase vector length identified most representative indicators for set. Linear regression showed that can adequately represent quantify impact different ( P < 0.001). linear non-linear higher (0.59 0.54), plantation (0.41 0.45) lower, similar herb community (0.37 0.44). Soil mostly affected by extracellular enzyme activities communities, reasons low plantations organic carbon (C) C. Overall, we demonstrate method could be useful indicate systems. Mixed improve increasing C, crucial ecosystem balance.
