Enhancing global agricultural sustainability critically requires improving the physicochemical properties of saline–alkali soil. Biochar has gained increasing attention as a strategy due to its unique properties. However, effect on soil varies significantly. This study uses psychometric meta-analysis across 137 studies synthesize findings from 1447 relatively independent data sets. investigates effects biochar with different characteristics top 20 cm various soils. In addition, aggregated boosted tree (ABT) analysis was used identify key factors influencing saline The results showed that application positive by reducing sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) and exchangeable percentage (ESP) 30.31% 28.88%, respectively, notable 48.97% enhancement in cation exchange capacity (CEC). A significant inverse relationship found between salinity (SC) ESP, while other were synergistic. mildly (<0.2%) moderately (0.2–0.4%) demonstrated greater improvement bulk density (SBD), total porosity (TP), moisture content (SMC) compared highly (>0.4%). reduction SC 4.9 times than physical positively correlated higher rates, largely driven movements associated migration moisture. produced at 401–500 °C generally most effective water surplus regions, for pH < 8.5, mixed (pH 6–8) 41–80 t ha−1 improvement.
