The researchers pioneered incorporating waste materials exhibiting pozzolanic properties and fibers from diverse industrial/agricultural fields into the construction industry to formulate enhanced, greener supplementary cementitious composites (SCMs). This research focused objectively on formulation/evaluation of low-CO2-embodied known as “novel, alternative, fiber-reinforced iron-based binary/ternary (abbreviated NAFRIC)”. incorporated iron powder (Fe), metakaolin (MK), pulverized fly ash (PFA), ground granulated blastfurnace slag (GGBS), palm ash, silica fume, limestone, which are anticipated absorb CO2 while producing siderite (ferrous carbonate FeCO3). All NAFRIC mixes formulated in this study demonstrated up 4–13% improvement compressive strength 70–130% flexural with an enhanced rupture modulus/post-crack ductility. ternary concrete (FRC) containing 8% MK + 10% PFA GGBS steel/polypropylene/polyethylene terephthalate (PET) performed best attaining 70 MPa 8.9 strengths. sulfate testing evaluated durability SCMs a 1:2:3 ratio better than cement control mix 1:1:3 ratio. specimens minimal surface deterioration/elongation negligible/no reduction after 270 days concentrated attack. microstructural analysis using X-ray diffraction/fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectroscopy supported parameters by showing minimal/no ettringite formation increased calcium silicate hydrates gel due use FeCO3 pozzolans. sustainable these better-performing 10–12% reduced embodied eco-friendly high-strength engineering/environmental benefits.

Published: Dec. 27, 2024

Global coal consumption is continuously increasing. It still the primary fuel used in power plants. Despite policies European Union aimed at reducing consumption, there are countries world where use continues to rise (China and India largest consumers of coal). Coal combustion produces waste, 70% which fly ash. consists mainly SiO2 Al2O3. Fly ash also includes Fe2O3, TiO2, MgO, K2O, CaO. This article describes various methods using can be cement industry, as a filler materials, zeolite synthesis, cenosphere separation, agriculture, water purification, road construction an asphalt filler, mine backfilling. An interesting method production rigid polyurethane foam was described. The concerns potential uses accordance with principles Circular Economy. environmental, energy, material aspects discussed.
