Four years after the Anthropocene Working Group (AWG) voted to work toward defining series/epoch with a base in mid-20th C, varved sediments of Crawford Lake (Milton, ON, Canada) were selected as Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) candidate. The initial major rise activity 239 + 240 Pu had been primary chronostratigraphic marker define Anthropocene, but precise year when this occurred could not be determined from measurements samples combining multiple varves. Abstract Abrupt planetary change forced by the cumulative and overwhelming impacts of human activities in mid‐twentieth century supports a new geologic epoch, named after Anthropos , agent this change. This transformation extends well beyond Holocene norms is identified records worldwide. A proposal to define Anthropocene series/epoch varved sediments from Crawford Lake, Ontario was rejected International Union Geological Sciences, but novel Earth System state will persist for tens millennia, dampening Milankovitch forcing that paces glacial–interglacial cycles through Quaternary Period.

Abstract The recommendation that the Anthropocene be denoted as a geological epoch was recently rejected by International Union of Geological Sciences. Here, we compare scientific rationales presented for Anthropocene, Holocene and six other epochs in Cenozoic Era: Pleistocene, Pliocene, Miocene, Oligocene, Eocene Paleocene. We also present historical perspective on process through which accepted formal epoch. conclude that, from purely perspective, case is stronger than good or better cases several Era.
