We provide a thorough review of the literature on peraluminous magmatism Late Neoproterozoic and Early Palaeozoic (mostly Cambrian-Middle Ordovician) age cropping out in many places around world (SW South Africa, NE Patagonia, NW Argentina, Colombia, SE Mexico Guatemala, European Variscan Massifs from Turkey to northern Burma through Tibet). Petrographically, these volcanic plutonic rocks contain K-feldspar phenocrysts sometimes smaller bluish-quartz glassy/fine-grained (volcanic/subvolcanic) or medium- coarse-grained (plutonic) matrix quartz, plagioclase, biotite, with other Al-bearing phases such as muscovite garnet minor phases. Notably, amphibole is conspicuously absent. Geochemically, dacitic (tonalitic) rhyolitic (granitic) are silica-rich, strongly crustal SrNd isotopic signature, pointing S-type magmatism, but they also show characteristics I-type subduction (a trace element signature typical continental-arc magmatism) A-type (enrichment Ga) magmatism. A prominent geochemical feature marked depletion Sr, resulting low very Sr/Y ratios (usually <5). This, together flat HREE slopes, suggests melting at pressures. The arc inherited their sources, which may comprise an old basement sediments derived Pan-African Andean-type orogenic belts. Coeval, volumetrically mafic common outcrops part bimodal sequence. Researchers have mostly attributed this extensional tectonics back-arc setting, where upwelling asthenospheric mantle triggered high-temperature-low-pressure partial largely metasedimentary (upper continental) crust little no contribution mantle. In reconstruction Gondwana, all situated peri-Gondwanan terranes, implying that related (and consequence of) rifting processes led opening aborted several oceans (Rheic, proto-Tethys), reflecting evolution margin Gondwana during Cambrian Ordovician. Given similarities petrography geochemistry (major elements isotopes) large volume, silicic Large Igneous Provinces been proposed for some sectors, possibility entire comprises single LIP evaluated. Although correlations different regions established previously, our knowledge, first study integrate detailed petrographic, geochronologic data conclude porphyritic reviewed here main magmatic expression extension area Palaeozoic.

Ophiolites are fragments of oceanic lithosphere now entrained within continents. Some ophiolites, such as the Bay Islands ophiolite in Appalachian-Caledonian Orogen and Semail Alpine-Himalayan Orogen, characterized by a metamorphic sole along their structural base. The records metamorphism subduction zone interface between upper lower plates with imbrication resulting an inverted assemblage higher grade over grade. is juxtaposed ophiolite, which forms through extension plate zone, during attempted of, subsequent emplacement onto, continental margin. We argue that ophiolites form small interior ocean basins supercontinent breakup generation expansion these oceans compensated lithospheric compression initiation multiple zones. Subduction induced adjacent to margin, likely discontinuities transform systems formed basin formation. In newly zones, subducting has limited lateral extent enabling its rapid evolution trench rollback leading plate. This infant system consumes narrow tract margin obduction underthrusting. These convergent boundaries secondary already established ongoing zones basins. They correspond temporally termination interaction reorganization elsewhere global network, we primary driver, triggering cascading sequence events, induces transient systems.
