Abstract Geological evidence supports the occurrence of an epicontinental Trans-Saharan Seaway bisecting African continent during Late Cretaceous to early Palaeogene. The seaway formed a wide saltwater channel connecting Neotethys with South Atlantic, yet no previous study has investigated its impact on freshwater fish diversification. Phylogenomic data and time-calibrated trees indicate signature for appearance three modern lineages characiform fishes. Phylogenetic analyses using ultraconserved elements 83 characiforms reveal that Alestidae, Hepsetus, Lepidarchidae fam. nov. originated Santonian–Campanian (84–77.5 Mya). consists two monotypic taxa not previously recognized as sister species: Niger tetra Arnoldichthys endemic lower Ogun rivers Nigeria, dwarf jellybean Lepidarchus from coastal Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea. Microcomputed tomography scans 117 provide novel morphological characters supporting Hepsetus Lepidarchidae, four monophyly five restricted Alestidae. divergence indicates allopatric speciation processes influenced by Seaway, partitioning ichthyofauna in west–east orientation. timing cladogenesis aligns Cenomanian fossil record is ~16–23 Myr younger than earliest characiform-like fossils outcrops Morocco Sudan. This highlights magnitude transgression events shaping biota gaps our understanding evolutionary history palaeobiogeography ray-finned fishes across continent.

Hybodontiformes are considered the closest relatives of modern sharks and were dominant shark group throughout most Mesozoic. Although, originally a marine group, during their long temporal range, they conquered freshwater environment. This is case numerous taxa known in northern Gondwana. Here, we report presence hybodontiform Aegyptobatus Albian-Cenomanian Alcântara Formation São Luis Basin, Northeastern Brazil. A comparison made with other teeth from Northern Gondwana suggests that noticeably same species found late Cenomanian Bahariya Egypt, A. kuehnei. Although probably restricted to freshwater, new discovery increases geographic range this taxon, adds one more common taxon between Brazilian Cretaceous units North Africa, extends down into Albian-Cenomanian.
