Monitoring networks show that the European Union Nitrates Directive (ND) has had mixed success in reducing nitrate concentrations groundwater. By combining machine learning and monitored (1992–2019), we estimate total area of hotspots Europe to be 401,000 km2, with 47% occurring outside Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs). We also found contrasting increasing or decreasing trends, varying per country time periods. only 5% 122,000 km2 2019 will meet quality standards by 2040 these may offset appearance new hotspots. Our results reveal effectiveness ND is limited both time-lags between implementation good practices pollution reduction an inadequate designation NVZs. Significant improvements regulation NVZs are necessary, as well monitoring stations terms spatial density information available concerning sampling depth, if objectives EU legislation protect groundwater achieved.

Bantul Regency, located on Java Island, is one of the areas in Indonesia with abundant groundwater sources, thus experiencing rapid urban growth. The hazard vulnerability this area has increased due to expansion that coevals changes land use and human population objective study was analyze how changed conditions what impact those have had. Because various variables associated growth, sub-districts Bambanglipuro were explicitly chosen as research areas. This compared between 2009 2021 a spatiotemporal manner. determination method used Susceptibility Index (SI), which consists parameters depth table, recharge, aquifer media, topography, use. Each parameter processed into an index by scoring weighting methods. Techniques for descriptive comparative analysis are employed ascertain will affect degree vulnerability. results classification show agroforestry decreased while semi-urban 2021. sub-district underwent numerous changes. On other hand, it known medium high levels dominate In instance, concluded variations impacted distributed.

A hierarchical fuzzy inference system (FIS) integrated with the DRASTIC model is applied in this study to enhance assessment of shallow groundwater vulnerability southeast Hungary, a region characterized by extensive agriculture and industrial growth. Traditional models often struggle parameter imprecision uncertainty, affecting their reliability. To address these limitations, logic was incorporated refine classification zones. The FIS incorporates seven parameters: depth water table, net recharge, aquifer media, soil topography, vadose zone impact, hydraulic conductivity, assigning flexible ratings through membership functions. classifies index (FGWVI) into low, moderate, high categories, revealing that 63.9% area highly susceptible contamination, particularly regions tables sandy soils. Validation conducted using nitrate (NO3−) concentrations electrical conductivity (EC) measurements from 46 agricultural wells assess correlation between predicted zones actual quality indicators. analysis revealed moderately strong positive relationship FGWVI both NO3− (R2 = 0.4785) EC 0.528), supporting model’s ability identify high-risk contamination This highlights effectiveness fuzzy-enhanced evaluating provides crucial insights assist policymakers identifying pollution sources developing strategies mitigate thereby alleviating stress on critical resource.

Published: March 17, 2025

Increasing chemical pollutants in groundwater within industrial parks pose a critical environmental challenge, necessitating innovative strategies to address contaminants with the highest risks health and ensure sustainable management. Herein, we investigated 277 from 367 sampling points across 10 rounds, totaling 1,016,590 measured data points. An prioritization index (EHPI) was proposed applied integrate multiple criteria: occurrence, migration, persistence, bioaccumulation, acute chronic toxicity, effects rank target for priority control. Thirty were classified as top-priority group 81 high-priority, metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, haloalkanes ranking highest, while emerging of concern ranked lower. The top 6 beryllium, benzo(g,h,i)perylene, nickel, benzo(a)pyrene, chrysene, arsenic. EHPI method compared against five other weighting schemes, including AHP (analytic hierarchy process), entropy, AHP-entropy, AHP-TOPSIS (technique order preference by similarity ideal solution), entropy-TOPSIS. effectively captured integrated results more simplistic schemes. Overall, 38 are recommended inclusion control list, focusing on high detection exceedance categories. This framework provides guidance focused monitoring, assessment, highest-risk pollutants, supporting effective human protection.
